"Rise & Recharge" was created by the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, with the backing of the Vodafone Foundation Australia. The app is a response to research highlighting the connection between prolonged sitting and the increased risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
The average adult spends around nine hours sedentary per day, often engaging in continuous sitting with minimal breaks. This lack of movement impacts the body's ability to metabolize food into energy efficiently, resulting in unhealthy levels of blood glucose, insulin, and blood fat. Studies have shown that even regular exercise may not fully counteract the negative health effects of extended periods of sitting.
With "Rise & Recharge," users can monitor their sitting time and frequency of movement. The app encourages users to stand up at least once every 30 minutes and accumulate active periods to earn a star rating for the day. The goal is to aim for a 5-star rating, reflecting a day with optimal movement habits.
For additional support in achieving a 5-star day, users can customize app reminders to receive regular alerts prompting them to break up prolonged sitting periods with movement.
Please be aware: This app utilizes step data gathered by the Apple Health app, leveraging the accelerometer within your phone. Since devices predating the iPhone 5s lack this feature, users of older models will need a compatible wearable motion tracker for accurate app functionality.
